Historical Birmingham

Founded in 1871 at the crossing of two rail lines near one of the world's richest deposits of minerals, the city of Birmingham quickly earned the name the "Magic City" due to its rapid growth and thriving iron and steel industry.  Having survived booms and busts, labor unrest, and civil rights tragedies and triumphs, the city of Birmingham has emerged as a strong vibrant community with a dense fabric of cultural amenities, corporate development, and innovative research.
